Ferry ride then sprint to beat the darkness

Ferry ride then sprint to beat the darkness. Michigan!
A much different day today. First I had to say good bye to Susan, Michael and Elle as they loaded up and headed back to Chicago via the Cheese Castle. We had a very late start for our three mile ride to our Speedy Ferry that would take us across Lake Michigan in about three hours. This was a great time to catch up, enjoy the scenery and catch a quick nap . Once we embarked, we were met by Megan and the Lunch Van for a quick snack before heading southeast to Holland. We of course had a late start to meet the Ferry and lost an hour with the crossing into our ninth state, Michigan.
The crew must have felt the time pressure because everyone moved out fairly quickly. Yours truly fired up his trusty bike computer and noted that the map for the next segment was not loaded. Whoops. We are very reliant on these little pieces of tech for finding our way through the back roads of this great country of ours. My usual group had already departed. Luckily Doyle and Lynn were still getting organized as well. I sheepishly asked Doyle if I could ride with them and provide directions. This pair is part of the “early birds” who leave way before I depart so I usually don’t get to ride with them. They were happy to have me so we headed out with me in the lead pulling our impromptu trio. This was a very comfortable pace for all of us so I just kept pulling. We scooped up Ron, another early bird, and on we went.
After the one and only rest stop, we continued and started to pass some of our crew and Guide Rae joined us in time to direct us through a very confusing path where the path worked its way around and eventually over the river. The early bird group was up to the challenge and we started passing more of our crew, some of whom jumped on the train. Ron was thrilled and noted our speed with glee as well as the fact that he was passing people and not getting passed! We eventually arrived with a train of a dozen riders as darkness started to fall. Our simple quick meal of pizza and beer never tasted so good. Off to bed and another day tomorrow. The glee and excitement of the usually slower riders who with a little encouragement rode out of their minds today makes this an all time favorite ride for me.

Mike, Ellie and I had so much fun spending time with you in the land of cows, beer and cheese curds, as well as meeting all of your equally crazy cycling friends. You are all amazing! Love you!
