We get to test our rain gear and pass the 3000 mile mark.

A very late start at 10:00 as this was scheduled to be a short day by our standards. An early arrival time to the next hotel when the rooms are not ready leads to not a little grumbling although everyone understands the drill now. Also our current inn was very charming and offered some easy hiking to the lake and a nice area to sit and work while overlooking the beautiful grounds. Even after the 0800 arrival from Dale’s house, I still had time for a second breakfast and to check some emails in pleasant surroundings.
When rooms aren’t ready at our destination, I find that sneaking into the Jacuzzi and pool shower really fills the time productively. Nevertheless our hotel in Meadville PA has a history of not allowing anyone to check in before 3 pm, even if rooms are ready so this helped shape the day. Of course this late start had to be balanced against a probable late afternoon rain storm. Predict the weather AND keep everyone happy. Glad I’m not a guide today!
The ride shaped up to be a good introduction to the hills of western PA. Beautiful hardwood trees and gently hilly roads which got us ready for more climbing to come. I rode with Pat at a reasonable pace after yesterday’s exertions on the bike with friend Dale. Ian caught us just before the state line and we did not stop for photos as the sign was on a narrow bridge with lots of traffic. With about 15 miles to go, we caught the “early birds”, Doyle, Lynn and Ron. I pealed off and joined them and with some optimism thought that we might beat the rain. I did all of the pulling but not sure if it helped given the swirling winds. Nine miles out we were greeted by rain and the gear emerged. Soaking but warm we found the hotel. Alas my room was last to be ready at 4pm but at least the Jacuzzi was nice! Tomorrow is our last stop in PA then on to NY. At 100 miles and over 5000 feet of climbing its time to go back to work!
