Racing the Rain

Our rest day was in Cazenovia NY. It’s a real town with a resort on a beautiful lake. Walking distance from our resort takes one to the one street that is the Main Street for the town. What made this town different from so many of the other one street towns that we have visited is that this one is decidedly upscale. It reminded me of my brother’s adopted English town of Barnes
After a laundry stop along with most of the group, I spent the rest day, well, resting. And eating. Repeat. I did discover a very good Giros place though. This is NY after all. The town was resting too as it is well off season. The resort looks like it has potential though with lots of slips for smaller boats and a nice shoreside restaurant. Put this down as a place to visit again.
After the day of rest, I was ready early and eager to start. Not only was I well rested but also rain was in the forecast to start in the 11-12 am range so best to put some miles in while the weather was optimal. The morning was a beautiful fall day. The ride started on a relatively quiet road. About five miles in are the beautiful Chittenango Falls. However the riding was ideal soooo no falls on a perfect riding day. The middle third of the day was decidedly more urban although the route did dive off the main thoroughfares when possible.
If you are a “leaf peeper,” the last third of the ride was for you. The colors are just starting to pop but the different shades of greens blending with the reds, yellows and golds is worth the ride. Later the innkeeper (yes she calls herself that) said that two weeks from now will be the best time for colors.
With 30 miles to go we started to get some mist that accelerated to rain and then heavy rain by the last 3 miles. Ironically the only piece of clothing that was dry was my rain jacket which was tucked in my pocket. Nevertheless I was warm as the heat generated by exertion marched that lost to the elements. I was however happy for a hot shower and dry clothes at the Piseco Lake Inn. This set of rustic cabins and lodge will be our residence for the evening. I shared my lodging with Ian of Manchester and together we rigged places to hang our clothes in front of the fan to dry them for our next exertions.
